Bullitt Movie Posters released in Australia
A Little Bit About This Great Movie
Bullitt (1968), directed by Peter Yates and starring Steve McQueen, is a quintessential example of gritty, stylish 1960's cinema. The film is best known for its groundbreaking car chase scene through the streets of San Francisco, which set a new standard for action sequences in film. McQueen, embodying the tough, no-nonsense police lieutenant Frank Bullitt, brings a magnetic intensity to the role, driving the film's suspense and cool factor. The movie combines a compelling narrative with a memorable score by Lalo Schifrin, creating a taut, engaging thriller that remains a classic in the genre.
The Movie Posters for the Australian Release
Original Daybills and the Australian One Sheet are amongst the most sort after of all Daybill movie posters from the 1960's. But there has always been some confusion about the order in which these poster versions were released and when. In Australia, there have been four versions of Daybills released in 1969 and the 70's. There is a duotone Orange/Black, a duotone Pink/Black, as well as single colour Purple, and a single colour Black (see images below).
What version was released and when?
Often we'll take a look at Studio Names/Logos and censorship stamps which changed over time to see if they can help us pin-point what year a poster may have been printed. In the case of the two duotone posters, Orange/Black and Pink/Black, the former has a Studio name of "Warner Bros. - Seven Arts" at the bottom which was used from 1967 to 1969 and Bullitt was released in Australia in May of 1969. Sometime during 1969, the change of Studio name to "Warner Bros." followed through to posters also.
So, this confirm that the Orange Black duotone Daybill version was the First Printing, produced in early 1969 for the May '69 release. The Pink Black duotone version was likely printed later in 1969 as a Second Printing due to the popularity and extended release of the movie.
The Single Colour Purple and Single Colour Black are often quoted as Re-Release printings for the 1970's, and although they are still highly collectible, these Re-Release versions are not as rare as the First Printing of Bullitt (1968) Daybill in Orange and Black that we have available here at Movie Posters Australia. These two posters also use the "Warner Bros." studio name showing that they must have been printed after the Studio name change in 1969.
The Australia One Sheet (shown above), is also a very rare. Australian One Sheets were printed in much smaller quantities prior to the 1970's and few have survived for some titles, and definitely in much smaller qualities than equivalent US One Sheets. The artwork used in the Australian One Sheet is the same as the International One Sheet poster (shown below) with poster artwork by Bill Gold.
The artwork of each version, and their striking colours, will make a great addition to any collection or to display and enjoy. At Movie Posters Australia, we personally love the artwork, design and colours of the Daybill First Printing, the Australian One Sheet, and the US Insert.
